Truman signs Marshall Plan

On this day in 1948 President Harry Truman signed the Marshall Plan. An ambitious, expensive effort to assist the European Nations ravaged by World War Two to rebuild and become trading partners with the United States. The theory was, by assisting the nations of Europe financially, it would stop the expansion of communism being proffered by the USSR. It worked...

  1. When Time Magazine was researching the "Man of the Century", my candidate was George Marshall. He created and ran the Army that won WWII, losing only 1 campaign (Philippines, 1941-42) and 1 battle (Battle of Kasserine Pass). That would have been enough for major honors, but to follow up with THE plan that has kept the world away from WWIII, and allowed it to become the prosperous place it is today. Certainly 100's of millions of people, probably billions are better off due to this one man.
